Judicial Officers of Belgium

Welcome

The National Chamber of Judicial Officers is the umbrella organisation for all judicial officers in Belgium. Made up of approximately 550 members, it was created in 1963 in order to establish uniform working methods, payment rates, ethical standards and disciplinary procedures within the profession.

The National Chamber works to establish a proper balance between the economic role and the social dimension of the profession of judicial officer, while favouring conciliation and amicable solutions as far as possible. The National Chamber also places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of information and continuous training of its members.

It is managed by the Permanent Council, the ‘parliament of judicial officers’, in which all judicial districts are represented. The Permanent Council represents the body of members and ensures that their interests are protected.

This body can exercise certain prerogatives assigned to the National Chamber, ranging from guaranteeing the uniformity of the disciplinary and ethical rules governing its members, the implementation of laws and regulations concerning its members, to defending their interests and representing them whatever the circumstances. The Permanent Council is also responsible for adopting directives and recommendations intended for judicial officers.

The Management Board is made up of five members elected by the Permanent Council. The Board’s mission is to represent the National Chamber of Judicial Officers with the official authorities; to provide the day-to-day management of the National Chamber; to propose any legal or regulatory changes in the interests of judicial officers; to implement the decisions of the Permanent Council; and to resolve, if possible by means of conciliation, any disputes of a professional nature that could arise between judicial officers in different judicial districts.

Although the National Chamber guarantees disciplinary uniformity, it does not have any direct disciplinary powers itself.

If you have any questions concerning the specific conduct of a judicial officer, do not hesitate to approach the competent judicial district chamber, or its Chairman, who will be able to deal with your request.
